Perlis State Park - Development of Caves for Ecotourism: A Perlis State Government project managed by the state forest department, MEC explored, surveyed and mapped the caves of the proposed park area; selected suitable caves and put forward proposals for development for visitor use; submitted plans for physical development, trained staff for park interpretation.

Forest Resource Mapping for Peninsular Malaysia: We were commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund, Malaysia to map current forest resources and the extent of habitat types, and to build models for forest chronosequence. This was part of a project to support timber certification in Malaysia for sustainable forestry.

Krau Wildlife Reserve Management Plan: The Department of Wildlife and National Parks has undertaken management building plan at the Krau Wildlife Reserve in Pahang The project is funded by the Malaysian Government and the Danish Government though DANCED. MEC’s involvement in the project has included drafting the management plan, running development workshops for DWNP staff, conducting forest habitat modeling and building models for bird and mammal species distribution. MEC has taken an innovative approach in this project, employing traditional resource mapping methods using aerial photographs with new forest sampling procedures. They are also developing cartographic support using satellite imagery.

Waste Management Plan for Northwest Malaysia: Contracted by NWI (Northern Waste Industries), MEC handled environmental issues concerning waste management in the four northwest states. This included audit work on the existing waste disposal sites, a planning for their closure and rehabilitation, planning for their replacement, identification and evaluation of sites to develop new facilities. MEC also prepared and drafted an environmental impact assessment for NWI’s development proposal. Much of the work for this project depended on building population models for this region to plan for service growth over the next 20 years.

Ecotourism Master Plan for Endau-Rompin National Park, Johor: Working with the Malaysian Nature Society on behalf of the Johor State Government, the aim of this project was to review the eco-tourism component of the original Endau-Rompin development proposal. MEC identified development zones, development sites, and provided detailed development proposals, and timetables.

Sustainable Forest Management Support: Principal Consultants to Rimbaka Forestry Corporation.  The project involves helping Rimbaka obtain Forest Stewardship Council certification for good forest management practice.  It involves the production of management and operations plans for logging and resource conservation.  It is a holistic attempt to balance economic production, ecological and environmental integrity and social accountability.
